Inquiry into British woman's 2018 Novichok poisoning to start
A public inquiry into the death of a woman who Britain says was unwittingly killed by the Novichok nerve agent following the attempted murder of former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal six years ago will begin on Monday. Dawn Sturgess died from exposure to Novichok in July 2018 after her partner found a counterfeit perfume bottle which police believe had been used by Russian intelligence operatives to smuggle the poison into the country. Skripal, who sold Russian secrets to Britain, and his daughter Yulia had been found slumped unconscious on a public bench in the southern English city of Salisbury four months earlier.

Geopolitics dents big UK businesses' optimism, Deloitte says
Optimism in large British companies softened ahead of the new Labour government's first annual budget, dented by worries around geopolitics, a survey showed on Monday. Accountants Deloitte said their quarterly gauge of business sentiment fell in the third quarter to +6% from +23% in the previous quarter, but still above the long-run average of -1%. The survey chimed with most other gauges of business and consumer confidence which point to a fall in sentiment ahead of the Oct. 30 budget, when finance minister Rachel Reeves is likely to announce tax hikes to ease the government's budget shortfall.

Britain on Monday asked its antitrust regulator to make growth and investment a priority as the government sought to woo some of the world's biggest businesses at a conference in London, in search of deals to help boost the sluggish economy. Prime Minister Keir Starmer won power in July pledging to reinvigorate run-down public services and infrastructure by ending an era of instability under the previous government. The government plans to announce tens of billions of pounds worth of deals in sectors including AI and life sciences during the investment conference, whose attendees include senior executives from Google, Blackrock and Eli Lilly.
