Kenyan police out of uniform and with no official identification fired live rounds at demonstrators at the country's parliament complex in Nairobi on June 25, Amnesty International said on Wednesday. That day saw "the use of officers without identity badges, uniforms or vehicles marked as police cars actively shooting at protesters and arresting others", Irũngũ Houghton, Amnesty's Kenya director, told Reuters as the rights group published a press release detailing its reconstruction of the events.

OECD sees global growth stabilising at 3.2% this year
Global growth is in the process of stabilising as the drag from central bank rate hikes fades and falling inflation boosts households' incomes, the OECD said on Wednesday, marginally raising its outlook for this year. The world economy was projected to grow 3.2% both this and next year, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development forecast, nudging up its 2024 forecast from 3.1% previously while leaving 2025 unchanged. As the lagged impact of central bank tightening evaporates, interest rate cuts would boost spending going forward while consumer spending benefitted from lower inflation, the OECD said in an update of its latest economic outlook.

Killing Hezbollah commanders will not bring the group to its knees, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday, after Israel hit senior figures in the Iran-backed movement during days of devastating air strikes across Lebanon. "The organisational strength and human resources of Hezbollah is very strong and will not be critically hit by the killing of a senior commander, even if that is clearly a loss," Khamenei said. Israel's new offensive against Hezbollah has killed 569 people since Monday according to Lebanon's health minister.

OECD sharply upgrades UK economic growth forecasts
The OECD sharply upgraded its forecast for British economic growth for this year and 2025 on Wednesday, after previously predicting Britain would have the weakest growth of any Group of Seven country. The Paris-based Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development forecasts Britain's economy will grow by 1.1% in 2024 and 1.2% in 2025, up from previous forecasts of 0.4% and 1.0%, and similar to Bank of England forecasts last month. The upward revision by the OECD - part of a broader global update to its forecasts - now places Britain's growth rate close to most other Group of Seven countries this year and next though behind that in the United States.
