Exclusive-Nokia to supply 5G radio equipment to Portugal's MEO, sources say
Nokia is set to win a contract to supply 5G radio equipment to Portuguese telecoms operator MEO, according to an internal Nokia blog post and two sources familiar with the matter. Nokia is set to secure the deal even though China's Huawei has been MEO's sole supplier of 2G, 3G and 4G Radio Access Network (RAN) equipment. MEO is one of Portugal's leading mobile operators formerly known as Telecom Portugal and now owned by France's Altice.

Apple's smartphone shipments in China rose 52% in April from a year ago, extending a rebound seen in March, according to data from a research firm affiliated the Chinese government. The jump follows a weak performance by the U.S. tech giant in the world's biggest smartphone market earlier this year amid intensifying competition in the high-end smartphone category from local rivals like Huawei. Shipments of foreign-branded phones in China increased by 52% in April to 3.495 million units from 2.301 million a year earlier, data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) showed on Tuesday.

Japanese nuclear power plant operator unveils a robot to assist in fixing damaged reactor
The robot will be tested inside one of the damaged reactors by October, for the first time since the plant’s meltdown after the magnitude 9.0 quake and tsunami in 2011. The target is two years behind schedule due to multiple delays. During Tuesday’s demonstration at the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Kobe, western Japan, where the robot has been developed, the device, equipped with tongs slowly extended from the tip of the telescopic pipe down to a heap of gravel. TEPCO plans to remove less than 3 grams (0.1 ounce) of debris in the actual test at the Fukushima plant.
