Couche-Tard to sell discounted food via smartphone app for 'half of the original price or less'

Canadian convenience store giant Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. says high fuel prices and food inflation are impacting customers and driving sales of its private label brand. A Couche Tard store is seen, Tuesday, September 20, 2016 in Deux-Montagnes, Quebec. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Ryan Remiorz

Gas station and convenience store giant Alimentation Couche-Tard (ATD.TO) plans to put unsold food on an app-based marketplace where customers can buy items at a steep discount.

The Quebec-based food and fuel retailer behind brands like Circle K and Couche-Tard announced a partnership on Thursday with Too Good To Go. Founded in Denmark, the company claims to run the world’s largest market for surplus food.

Couche-Tard says the partnership is expected to span over 9,000 locations in Canada, the United States, Ireland and Poland by the end of the year.

“Not only does it bolster our global sustainability commitments, it's also an innovative way for our customers to try our delicious food at a great price,” Couche-Tard chief people officer and sustainability leader Ina Strand stated in a news release.

Couche-Tard says customers will be able to use Too Good To Go’s free mobile app to “save good food from going to waste and enjoy it at half of the original price or less.”

The company’s food inventory will be inspected daily for items nearing expiration, according to the release. Those will be packed into "Too Good To Go Surprise Bags" for consumers to purchase.

Couche-Tard operates more than 16,700 stores in 29 countries and territories. The United States is its largest region, with more than 7,000 sites.

For months, CEO Brian Hannasch has warned investors about “belt-tightening” consumers.

“On the convenience side specifically, it's really that lower-income consumer that we're seeing strained today,” he told analysts on a post-earnings conference call in March.

In Canada, Too Good To Go has also partnered with Metro grocery stores. Food items from about 100 Metro locations in Ontario have been available on the app since 2022. The partnership was expanded to Metro’s Quebec locations in April.
