Google Fiber plans to bring its high-speed internet service to multiple cities in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Nebraska and Nevada over the next several years in its first big expansion since it spun out as an independent Alphabet Inc unit in 2015. In his first media interview since becoming chief executive of Google Fiber in February 2018, Dinni Jain told Reuters on Wednesday that his team was finally prepared to "add a little bit more build velocity" after over four years of sharpening operations. "There was an impression 10 years ago that Google Fiber was trying to build the entire country," Jain said.
The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) said its Small Business Optimism Index rose four-tenths of a point last month to 89.9, the first monthly increase since December. Surging inflation has forced the Federal Reserve to raise rates aggressively this year in a bid to slow the economy without tipping it into recession. U.S. job growth unexpectedly accelerated in July, and economists polled by Reuters estimate consumer prices rose 8.7% last month from a year earlier.

The Canadian dollar weakened against its U.S. counterpart on Tuesday, adding to its August decline, as cautious trading gripped financial markets ahead of a key U.S. inflation report this week. The Canadian dollar was down 0.3% at 1.2895 to the greenback, or 77.55 U.S. cents, after trading in a range of 1.2844 to 1.2900. "The broader tone appears to be dominating and CAD is trading in tandem with risk, given modest weakness across global equity indices," said Eric Theoret, global macro strategist at Manulife Investment Management.
(Reuters) -Australia's Graincorp raised its annual profit forecast for the second time, as the agribusiness firm capitalises on strong demand for grains and vegetable oils amid a supply crunch from the war in Ukraine, pushing its shares up more than 10%. The profit upgrade on Wednesday was also encouraged by expectations of above-average East Coast Australian (ECA) crop in year 2022/23, combined with a favourable three-month rainfall outlook. Global wheat prices reached record levels in early 2022 as major exporter Ukraine's supplies were essentially cut off due to Russia's invasion, triggering a five-fold jump in Graincorp's first-half profit and allowing it to pay a special dividend.
Demand for its vaccine is also waning in the United States, where it was authorized for use among adults last month and was expected to be preferred by the skeptics of messenger RNA-based shots from Moderna Inc and Pfizer Inc. But only 7,381 Novavax vaccine doses have been administered so far in the country and Chief Executive Stanley Erck said that its late launch could have hampered demand. Novavax shares fell 29.6% to close down at $40.28 a share.

(Reuters) -Swiss duty-free retailer Dufry said on Tuesday it saw strong sales momentum continue in July despite the soaring inflation, after its turnover more than doubled in the first six months of the year. The Basel-based group posted a 146% rise in turnover to 2.92 billion Swiss francs ($3.06 billion) in the January to June period, corresponding to 75.5% of the pre-pandemic 2019 levels in constant currency. Chief Executive Officer Xavier Rossinyol, who took over the role from June 1, said the strong momentum had continued into July, when it reached around 90% of 2019 turnover levels.
CALGARY — Suncor Energy Inc. says its Commerce City refinery in Colorado is back up and running after an equipment malfunction earlier Monday. Suncor spokeswoman Mita Adesanya said the malfunction caused the safety system within one of the units at the refinery to activate. She said the system worked as designed, shutting down the equipment to prevent any further disruption to operations. Suncor sent out an alert Monday morning warning residents in the area that the temporary shutdown could resu

The dollar fell more than 1 percent on Wednesday following a cooler-than-expected inflation report for July that raised expectations of a less aggressive rate hike cycle than previously anticipated from the U.S. Federal Reserve. "This is good news for FX traders, as it was a pretty clear reaction and you will probably see that there still should be some follow-through," said Edward Moya, senior market analyst at Oanda. The Fed has indicated that several monthly declines in CPI growth will be needed before it lets up on the increasingly aggressive monetary policy tightening it has delivered to tame inflation currently running at four-decade highs.

Toshiba Corp on Wednesday posted an unexpected operating loss in the April-June first quarter as it grappled with a global chip shortage and a sharp rise in costs for raw materials. Higher material and logistics costs pushed down its operating earnings by 9.4 billion yen, while a chip shortage had a negative impact of about 3 billion yen, the company said. Bain Capital, CVC Capital Partners and Brookfield Asset Management as well as a consortium involving state-backed Japan Investment Corp and private equity firm Japan Industrial Partners have been selected by Toshiba to proceed to a second bidding round.
Northrop Grumman has signed a launch deal with Elon Musk's SpaceX to send three cargo missions to the International Space Station while the company builds an upgraded version of its workhorse Antares rocket, a Northrop spokeswoman said on Monday. The launch agreement with SpaceX coincides with Northrop climbing out of a months-long predicament with its workhorse Antares rocket, whose Russian-made engines were cut off from the United States in March by Moscow in retaliation for Western sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine. "The launches will take place in late 2023 and 2024 from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida in support of the NG-20, -21 and -22 CRS missions," Northrop spokeswoman Ellen Klicka said in an email.
