Suspected DUI driver identified in hitting, killing woman and injuring 4-year-old

A 35-year-old Sacramento woman was killed and a 4-year-old girl was hospitalized in critical condition after they were struck by a suspected DUI driver Thursday morning in Sacramento County, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Sacramento County Coroner's Office on Friday identified the mother killed as 35-year-old Veronica Vargas. On a GoFundMe page organized by a family member, pictures of Vargas and her daughter, nicknamed Sammy, are posted with a message that reads, in part: "Veronica leaves behind her husband Erick and her 5 young children. Our entire family is mourning the loss of such a beautiful, kindhearted and sweet soul and we are praying for Sammy and doing everything we can. With a heavy heart, we ask for whoever would like to help. Please also help share this link. We thank you for your kindness and prayers."
