Spring Snow Slickens Roads in Utah's Cottonwood Canyons

Heavy snow and strong winds created hazardous driving conditions across northern Utah on Wednesday, April 14, with the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) reporting “multiple crashes” on I-80 through Parleys Canyon due to the wintry weather.

In Utah’s Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons, officials warned drivers of slickened roads and put the state’s Traction Law into effect, requiring vehicles to be equipped with approved snow tires or other traction devices such as tire chains to pass through.

Footage posted just after 11 am local time by UDOT officials shows wet roadways and poor visibility as snow fell in Cottonwood Canyons.

The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City said snow showers would continue in the Cottonwood and Provo Canyons through the day, before tapering off late Wednesday night. Snowfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour were possible in Cottonwood Canyons Wednesday evening, the weather service said. Credit: UDOT Cottonwood Canyons via Storyful
