Spanish Military Shovel Ash Covering Homes in La Palma

The Spanish military shoveled ash sitting on top of roofs on the island of La Palma to clear them in case the weight of the material caused the buildings to collapse, footage posted on Wednesday, October 27, shows.

Video released by the Ministry of Defense shows soldiers using shovels, brooms and wheelbarrows to remove ash from rooftops, with the Cumbre Vieja volcano seen still erupting in the background.

The Canary Islands Volcanology Institute (Involcan) reported the eruption strengthened on Wednesday night, following a small collapse inside a cone earlier in the day. Credit: Ministerio Defensa via Storyful
