Ranking the 'best-looking' NHL coaches

Gambling.com put together a polarizing list of NHL coaches using a beauty measurement app. Edmonton Oilers’ Jay Woodcroft was named the most attractive in the league, to the shock of everyone on Zone Time.

Video Transcript

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Let's talk about that damn list of most handsome NHL coaches. Let's finally do this. This is something that has been out for a couple of weeks now, a gambling website that doesn't pay any of us, decided to let everyone know in order from 1 to 32 who the most handsome NHL coaches are according to some random-ass algorithm.

And I don't need to go through every single coach on this list. But I find it really ridiculous that Darryl Sutter is number two on this list.

OMAR: Thank you. How?

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Like--

OMAR: How?

JULIAN MCKENZIE: No disrespect to Darryl. I'm not-- look, Darryl, nothing bad to say about Darryl as far as I'm concerned. Brother, you're not number two. I'm sorry.

[LAUGHTER]

I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

Paul Maurice absolutely should be ranked ahead of Darryl Sutter. Marte St-Louis should be ranked ahead of Darryl Sutter. I think Marte St-Louis is a handsome shortcake. And he deserves to be ranked higher than Darryl Sutter.

SAM CHANG: [INAUDIBLE]

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Yes, Rod Brind'Amour. He tied for 10th on this list.

OMAR: That's so disrespectful. He could punch a hole through like every single coach in the NHL. He is shredded.

I don't understand. That shocked the hell out of me. I don't understand how he's that low. There's no way. Absolutely no way.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Doesn't make sense to me. I still think Peter Laviolette ranked dead last. I don't understand the logic. And do I just think people-- do I have a different view of beauty standards compared to other people? I understand beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But Peter Laviolette is not 32.

SAM CHANG: I also don't think Peter Laviolette and Jay Woodcroft look that different.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Who--

OMAR: I don't-- what's the criteria. I don't know what the criteria is.

AVRY LEWIS-MCDOUGALL: No one knows.

SAM CHANG: They entered it into some app. They put all the photos through an app.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: So some app just dictates that Jay Woodcraft is 31 coaches ahead of Peter Laviolette.

OMAR: This app determined that Jay Woodcraft is hotter than Rod Brind'Amour. That is asinine. That's the--

JULIAN MCKENZIE: And Darryl Sutter is second.

OMAR: That's the craziest thing I've ever seen.

SAM CHANG: You guys, Bruce Boudreau is 16.

OMAR: What?

[LAUGHTER]

What is this list?

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Bruce, there it is.

SAM CHANG: Bruce is ahead of Luke Richardson and Martin St-Louis.

AVRY LEWIS-MCDOUGALL: Yeah, that's shocking.

OMAR: Is Sheldon there? OK, Sheldon made 13, OK.

AVRY LEWIS-MCDOUGALL: I'm surprised Jon Cooper and Jared Bednar were mid table because that's wrong. They are not-- they are not [INAUDIBLE].

SAM CHANG: Jon Cooper is very low on this list.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Jon Cooper's 27?

AVRY LEWIS-MCDOUGALL: That's very incorrect.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: What? David Quinn is 29?

OMAR: Yo, Jared Bednar should be higher too, man. What the heck is this?

SAM CHANG: What a very strange list.

OMAR: How is Lindy Ruff in the top 20? What the hell is this list?

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Nah, this is crazy. Yo, John Hynes is four. John Hynes is too high.

OMAR: man, man, and again, if there's any NHL coach that ends up watching this, this is no disrespect, no hate. However, the facts are the facts, man. There are some solid question marks on this list. Dallas Eakins seven? Come on. Craig Berube-- get the hell out of here, man. This is a stupid list.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: I'll say this. John Tortorella at nine, you know what, I don't hate it.

OMAR: What?

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Tortorella at nine.

OMAR: I swear this is just a frickin' lottery bowl. And they just pick random names.

AVRY LEWIS-MCDOUGALL: Brad Larsen is not 12.

OMAR: I don't understand.

AVRY LEWIS-MCDOUGALL: Brad Larsen is not 12. I'm sorry.

OMAR: Oh my gosh.

SAM CHANG: I'm sorry. I actually got to Lane Lambert and legitimately had forgotten he was the Islanders coach.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Yeah, because the Islanders decided to not bring back Barry Trotz. Where would Barry Trotz ranked on this?

AVRY LEWIS-MCDOUGALL: Probably second or third.

OMAR: I was about to say, bro, probably second or third. This is all over the place. I have no idea.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Oh my God.

OMAR: Oh my God, that's hilarious.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: This is-- I'm glad we were able to spend some time on this because this is the most ridiculous thing. There's a lot of ridiculous things I'm sure we will get to on Zone Time. But this random, Golden ratio face way of doing things--

OMAR: Bruce Cassidy is hotter than Mike Sullivan. What the flip is this?

JULIAN MCKENZIE: I love his reactions.

AVRY LEWIS-MCDOUGALL: I can-- I'm just seeing Omar--

SAM CHANG: This is just live reactions from Omar.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: This is really good.

OMAR: This is so stupid.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: This is some of the best internet content we could ever muster from this. This is perfect.

OMAR: This is so weird. Rick Bowness. What the [INAUDIBLE]?

[LAUGHTER]

AVRY LEWIS-MCDOUGALL: [INAUDIBLE] Omar's censoring himself [INAUDIBLE].

OMAR: Oh my God, this list is ridiculous, man.

AVRY LEWIS-MCDOUGALL: If his own time was uncensored, this would be way different reaction right now.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: How much more different would it be if this was uncensored?

OMAR: Everything that I say in relevance the least would have an F word in between.

SAM CHANG: OK, did you hear what Bruce's reaction to the list was, though, because it was the best?

OMAR: They asked coaches?

SAM CHANG: Oh, Connex Media ask anything and everything. But it was a great answer.

OMAR: What did he say?

SAM CHANG: He believes that an awful lot of blind people were involved.

OMAR: The honesty. Bless him. I hope he didn't get fired. Bless him.

SAM CHANG: Me, too.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Do you think Quinn was asked about it? And I think he said like Derek Lalonde being at number three, I know his number should start with a three. But there's no way he should be number three. Like David Quinn had the most underrated quote of anybody. I think that was him.

Everyone else is like yeah, it's kind of weird. Everyone's blind. But David Quinn straight up went for Derek Lalonde and was like, nah, bro, you definitely not better looking them me. You ugly.

OMAR: That's so funny.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: I'll pull up the specific quote that he said because this is hilarious. He says, I'm happy with 29th. It means you're not lost. It's what coaching does to you. Look at me. And he says I know Derek--

OMAR: That's hilarious.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: He says I know Derek alone. He ain't three. There's a three in there. But please, there's another after-- there's another number after it. Please quote me.

OMAR: Please. He's like, I said that, yes.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Yes, I'll say it.

OMAR: Oh my God.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Even Darryl Sutter was asked about it over the week. It's funny, actually, like Darryl Sutter got asked about it over the weekend before that Calgary-Edmonton game. And I remember when that list came out among all of the media people at Calgary, I remember just as a joke like, all right, who's going to ask like Darryl Sutter this question? And everyone just looked at each other like, I ain't going to do it.

OMAR: Yeah, exactly.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: And [INAUDIBLE] like Bob Stauffer from Oilers media to ask him that question. I don't really remember specifically. But Sutter didn't say anything like-- he didn't give a Zinger. But I think-- I don't necessarily think he agrees with that ranking either.

OMAR: [INAUDIBLE] just like OK. Darryl Sutter very like-- there's a YouTube compilation of Darryl Sutterisms. It's my favorite video. It's so funny.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: [INAUDIBLE] Darryl Sutter. He's a guy who like-- if you guys are ever in a position where you have to ask Darryl Sutter a question, make sure you ask him-- what makes you ask him a question? Two, be prepared for him to answer the question.

If you're one of those people who's trying to ask a question and you have like an ulterior motive behind it, you're trying to get him to say something else, he's not going to do it. He's going to answer the question.

OMAR: Darryl Sutter speaks in face value, yeah.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Yeah, I asked him if Jacob Markstrom was OK because he had been battling an illness. And maybe other coaches would be like yeah, he has been battling an illness. And he's been sick.

And he's trying to get himself up to shape, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I went to Darryl Sutter and was like, is Jacob Berkshire OK? He's OK. That's all he said.

OMAR: That's hilarious.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: That's all he said. He's OK, just nodded his head and just went about his business.

OMAR: That's awesome.

JULIAN MCKENZIE: Darryl Sutter, everybody. Darryl Sutter.
