Germany bets on India to reduce reliance on China
Chancellor Olaf Scholz leads a high-level delegation to New Delhi this week, betting that greater access to the vast Indian market can reduce Germany's reliance on Beijing even if India does not turn out to be the "new China". From cars to logistics, German companies are largely optimistic about India's growth potential, tapping into a wealth of skilled young workers, a cheaper cost base and economic growth motoring at around 7%. The visit comes at a delicate time for Germany, whose export-oriented economy faces a second year of contraction and worries over a trade dispute between the European Union and China that could rebound on German companies.

UK pay growth steadies, employers see further slowing in 2025
Growth in pay awards by British employers stagnated during the three months to September and firms expect average wage rises to cool over the coming 12 months, according to a survey that added to signs that Britain's labour market is softening. Human resources data company Brightmine said on Wednesday the expected median pay award in the year ahead was 3%, down from pay awards of 6% in the same period in 2023, reflecting a sharp drop in inflation. It said pay rises held at 4% in the three months to September, the same as in the three months to August although it was lower than a 4.8% increase in the second quarter.
