Michael Jordan’s Dynasty Collection sneakers could ‘sell for $100 million’: Collector

ShoeZeum Owner and Curator Jordan Geller joins Yahoo Finance Live to break down the worth of Michael Jordan's "Dynasty Collection" of sneakers from NBA championship victories that are up for auction by Sotheby's in a private sale.

Video Transcript

DAVE BRIGGS: The all-time record for a price paid for a sneaker collection is about to get dunked on. The so-called Dynasty collection is the sole defining holy grail of sneaker collecting. That's according to Sotheby's, who is now auctioning off the Michael Jordan championship game worn sneaker collection in Dubai. Jordan Geller is the ShoeZeum owner. In 2012, the Guinness Book of World Records named him as having the biggest sneaker collection on the planet. Jordan, good to see you, my man. Tell me why this is the holy grail of sneaker collections, and how much do you think it will fetch?

JORDAN GELLER: So, yes, thank you so much for having me. This collection is absolutely remarkable. We're talking about a sneaker that Michael Jordan wore during the championship win of each of his six championships, so the shoes that he wore on his feet when they won those championships. And it's just a single shoe from each of those games. I believe that this collection could sell for $100 million.

SEANA SMITH: $100 million worth, and that is a heck of a lot of money. Put this in context for us, just in terms of how much maybe other shoe collections have gone for and just how valuable this collection of those six shoes is.

JORDAN GELLER: So, very recently, Sotheby's actually auctioned off a jersey that Michael Jordan wore during one game during an NBA Finals run. And actually, the Bulls lost that game when Michael Jordan was wearing that jersey. The jersey sold for over $10 million. So we're talking about a jersey from a losing game going for $10 million compared to six shoes from not only winning games, but from the games that they actually won the championships in. So $100 million, I think, is reasonable.

DAVE BRIGGS: Insane. Accumulated by a former Bulls communications director. And if you go back, it's remarkable to see the photos of Michael Jordan hopping around or hobbling around with one shoe on after winning a ring. So you know it's legit. If you could weigh in, Jordan, on there is a little bit of something unique about each and every one of these shoes, highlight some of your favorite attributes for us.

JORDAN GELLER: Yeah, well, before we get into the individual shoes, I think it's absolutely remarkable that the six shoes were kept together, going all the way back from 1991 when MJ won his first championship in the Air Jordan 6 to when he hit the last shot in 1998. We're talking about an eight-year gap between the first shoe and the last shoe, which shows me that Michael Jordan was collecting shoes before any of us were, or the person that he was giving them to was collecting them. So that's amazing.

The Air Jordan 6 was actually inspired by Michael Jordan's Porsche. There's a heel tab that hangs off of the back of the shoe, and it was inspired by the whale tail on the back of Michael Jordan's 911. The Air Jordan 14, which is the last shoe that he wore during the last shot, was inspired by Michael Jordan's Ferrari that he was driving at the time. So the inspirations behind these individual shoes are just amazing. And then the fact that Michael wore them when he won the championships, it makes them real one of one grails.

SEANA SMITH: I mean, just from the historical standpoint, when they were worn, the fact that it was worn by Michael Jordan throughout those championship games, and then also just the cultural impact of that going forward, I guess, how do you wrap your head around how significant this is and how much in demand a collection like this will always be?

JORDAN GELLER: So let's just talk about the Air Jordan 11, the black and red patent leather shoe that's four from the left. That's one of the most important and iconic Air Jordans of them all. And so just a pair of those that was game worn by Michael Jordan, that's exceptional. But the shoe that he was wearing when they won that championship, when he's laying on the ground in the locker room overwhelmed by emotion because he just lost his father a year earlier, I mean, I can't even imagine what that one single shoe would be worth. And we're talking that that's one of six shoes in this collection. It's astounding.

DAVE BRIGGS: And one of my favorite attributes of those shoes, 1993, he writes on this shoe, our last effing game. Clearly, it was nowhere near Michael's last game in '93. What really gave new life to the Michael Jordan collectibles? And will he always be the GOAT when it comes to memorabilia and sneakers like this?

JORDAN GELLER: Yes, and something about that shoe with the effing inscription on there, I feel like it really shows Michael Jordan's competitive edge. And while it wasn't the last shoe that he ended up wearing, it was the last shoe that he wore that season to clinch the championship and seal the deal.

SEANA SMITH: I am certainly excited to see how much these six MJ worn sneakers end up going for. Jordan Geller, great stuff. Thanks so much.

JORDAN GELLER: Thank you.
