What Kim Kardashian, Kanye West divorce means for their $2.1 billion fortune

Yahoo Finance's Alexandra Canal breaks down the money at stake in Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's divorce.

Video Transcript

ADAM SHAPIRO: There is some news that has been breaking regarding Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. Let's bring in Allie Canal for more on this as well as National Margarita Day, which is coming up-- but first, the breaking news.

ALEXANDRA CANAL: Kim K, National Margarita Day-- it's a big Friday. But yes, Kim Kardashian has filed for divorce from Kanye West, according to multiple reports. A big question here is going to be what that means for the couple's finances. According to "Forbes", they are both worth over $2 billion.

Now, on paper, Kanye West has a little bit more money than Kim, valued at over $1 billion, while Kim Kardashian has around $750 million. However, Kim K's assets are more liquidable. So if she wanted to, she could more easily convert that into cash-- so at the end of the day, both really high-net-worth individuals.

TMZ said that they do have a prenup in place. I did speak to a lawyer earlier about this, and he said it'd be very unusual if they did not have a prenup. This is Kim Kardashian's third marriage. She's been around the block.

So this prenup is in place. And what that means is that anything that the couple owned or did business-wise prior to their marriage is protected. So that includes Kim K's "Keeping Up With the Kardashian" empire, along with Kanye West's Yeezy line.

Now, the big thing that's going to be in question are their multiple properties. They have four homes. One of the homes has a $30,000 bathroom sink. They also have cars, art, collectibles, $30,000 worth of livestock. All of that is going to have to be negotiated, and this is the period that they are currently in, this open-market, bargain situation.

For example, if Kim K gets the Hidden Hills house, and that is worth more than the ranch out in Wyoming, and that's what Kanye gets, she might say to him, OK, well, take this convertible, or take this collectible for X amount of dollars.

Now, TMZ says that they are close to their property settlement. All seems to be very amicable at the moment, and that is very important because the lawyer that I spoke with said that this needs to be as smooth of a divorce proceeding as possible. You don't want to get nasty. You don't want to fight over the kids because that can ultimately impact the brand value of both Kim K and Kanye West and prevent them from growing their brands in the future.

Kim K is very smart with this. She's been in the media and the limelight for quite some time, and this seems to be the approach that she's taken. She's filed for joint custody. Kanye West seems OK with that. Neither party has contested the prenup. So if this continues, they should both ultimately get what they want out of this.
