Former England striker Greaves dies aged 81

Jimmy Greaves, one of England's most prolific strikers and Tottenham Hotspur's record goalscorer, has died at the age of 81, the Premier League club said on Sunday (September 19).

Greaves scored 266 goals for Tottenham between 1961 and 1970 - and his 37 league goals in the 62-63 season remains a club record.

He began his career with Chelsea in 1957.

Greaves scored 44 goals in 57 internationals for England, making him the country's fourth-highest scorer.

He played in England's three group games at the 1966 World Cup before getting injured.

Tottenham said in a statement that Greaves died at his home in the early hours of Sunday morning.

In later life, Greaves struggled with alcoholism before becoming a TV presenter on the popular "Saint and Greavsie" programme.

His record of 357 goals in the English top flight remains unsurpassed fifty years since he retired as a professional in 1971.
