Editor’s Edition: Federal election will define Canada’s global climate reputation

Liberal leader Justin Trudeau is still locked in a virtual dead heat with Erin O’Toole’s Conservative party, according to the latest polls on the upcoming federal election.

A change of government could re-define Canada's global reputation on climate change.

Tom Rand, author of the book Climate Capitalism, discusses what a Conservative win would mean for Canada at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in November. He believes the Tories could make Canada the first country to formally request permission to roll back its national emissions targets.

“[That’s] not the Canada I know and love,” Rand told Yahoo Finance Canada’s Editor’s Edition. “We will have trouble meeting those [current] targets. But at least we show up to the game in good spirit, intending to play hard, and that’s not what’s going to happen if we get a Conservative government.”

Rand also weighs in on a report in The Guardian about Chevron’s massive carbon capture and storage project missing its five-year target. He also discusses why scientists potty-training cows may be a sign the world needs to eat less beef.
