Driver in Police Custody After Collision on Manhattan's East Side Leaves Several Injured

Streets were closed and buses rerouted after a traffic collision at the corner of East 50th Street and 2nd Avenue in New York City left several people injured on Friday morning, March 5.

WCBS reporter Marla Diamond shared video showing the damage at the scene.

According to police, a van driving south on 2nd Avenue hit a black Toyota Camry between 50th and 51st streets at around 8:30 am, sending the Camry into an outdoor dining structure located at 945 2nd Avenue, NY1 reported.

Police told local media the van continued on the sidewalk down to 49th Street and 2nd Avenue, where it hit a fruit stand and three more pedestrians before slamming into a light pole. Reports said the driver of the van was taken into custody and is suspected of DWI.

Police said at least seven were hurt, including two children. Credit: Marla Diamond via Storyful
