Factbox-UniCredit's bank in Russia and the ECB's demands

Italian bank UniCredit has filed a claim at the European Union's General Court (EUGC) over requests from the European Central Bank that the lender cut back its business in Russia. UniCredit said on Monday the bank is asking the court to confirm that obligations set by the ECB are consistent with EU laws that enforce sanctions on Russia as well as Russian laws. In the meantime, UniCredit is seeking a suspension of the ECB's requests pending the court ruling.

UniCredit contests ECB demands to cut Russia risks in EU court

MILAN (Reuters) -UniCredit said on Monday it was challenging the terms set by the ECB for the Italian bank to cut its exposure to Russia, and seeking a ruling from the EU's General Court, as well as a freezing of the request in the meantime. Euro zone banks still involved with Russia more than two years after Moscow invaded Ukraine have come under growing pressure in recent weeks from the bloc's supervisors, as well as U.S. authorities, over their ties to the country. The application may take several months and will be preceded by a ruling on its suspension request in the coming months, UniCredit said, adding that it was necessary to avoid potential "serious unintended consequences" of the ECB decision.

Russian court orders Italy's UniCredit to pay $480 million over aborted gas project

A Russian court has ordered Italian bank UniCredit to pay 448.2 million euros ($479.44 million) in a lawsuit over an aborted gas project brought by St Petersburg-based RusChemAlliance, a joint venture 50% owned by Russian gas giant Gazprom. UniCredit was one of the guarantor lenders under a contract for the construction of a gas processing plant in Russia with Germany's Linde, which was terminated due to Western sanctions against Moscow over the conflict in Ukraine. "The claim is satisfied in full," the St Petersburg Arbitration Court said in a filing.
