Norwegian Air reaches wage deal with pilots, averting strike

OSLO (Reuters) -Budget carrier Norwegian Air and its pilots have reached a deal on a new collective agreement, preventing a strike that could have grounded many flights, the airline and labour union officials said on Saturday. A strike would have been a blow to Norwegian, which is about to enter what is traditionally its most profitable time of the year. "I am pleased that we have reached an agreement," CEO Geir Karlsen said in a statement.

Some Norwegian Air pilots threaten to strike from June 1

Around 17 Norwegian Air pilots plan to take strike action from June 1 if wage negotiations fail later this week, a government-appointed mediator said on Tuesday, in what could be the first step towards broader industrial action during the busy summer season. Norwegian, which employs around 1,300 pilots in total, has already renewed its collective agreement with pilots flying from the airline's bases in Denmark and Spain. "Our goal is to reach an agreement in the mediation, and beyond that, it is too early to say what kind of consequences a possible strike will have," Norwegian Air said in an emailed comment when asked how a strike might disrupt services.

Norwegian Air shares fall after bigger-than-expected Q1 loss

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) -Budget carrier Norwegian Air reported a wider-than-expected operating loss in the first quarter on Thursday, partly due to a weak Norwegian krone, sending its shares lower, but repeated its 2024 guidance on the back of strong summer demand. The carrier once flew transatlantic but straining under heavy debts and hit by the pandemic, it sought bankruptcy protection in 2020. It emerged from bankruptcy protection in 2021 with a shrunk fleet and now focuses on its core Nordic market.
