The Granatelli jet-powered Indy 500 racer and Corvette

Two of the stars at next week's Barrett-Jackson auction will be this pair of relics — a Lotus Indy 500 car and Chevy Corvette both powered by gas turbines. Both were created by Andy Granatelli, the former head of STP and a devoted Indy 500 owner, who nearly made turbine cars the future of racing in the 1960s — and whose son Vince used one of those engines to transform an everday 1978 Vette into a jet-powered beast. Read more, and watch a drive of the Vette here.
