Pearls in the...Outfield? Joc Pederson Is the Latest to Sport a Pearl Necklace

  • <p class="body-dropcap">While most people keep their eyes on the ball during the World Series, at <em>T&C </em>we keep our eyes on the jewels. Specifically, the pearl necklace of Atlanta Braves' outfielder Joc Pederson. Chain necklaces are nearly as de rigueur as the baseball uniform itself, but this is the first time pearls have shown up on the field (not even the ladies of <em>A League of their Own </em>dared). What's more, fans are now showing up to the game wearing their own necklaces: a crowd of beer-swigging, baseball-cap wearing dieheads, clutching their pearls at the top of the ninth. </p><p>Pederson is on to something. In the 16th and 17th centuries, pearls were considered to be the highest form of jewelry because they were natural wonders (unlike gemstones which needed to be cut and polished). Royal and noble men wore them frequently, King Charles I wore a single oversize pearl earring to his execution (it was his signature look after all). </p><p>Pearls were the ultimate power accessory–and they still are today. Harry Styles channeled a kingly swagger at the Met Ball in 2019, when he put on not one but two pearl earrings in his left ear, the same as Charles I. Certainly A$AP Rocky, who regularly, brilliantly combines Edwardian-worthy gems with streetwear, has learned what a statement even a single pearl can make. And we don't think it is an accident that the Atlanta Braves have been winning games since Pederson's pearls made their debut in September.
