Meet the Stars Behind Your Favorite Characters on 'Yellowstone'

Costner stars as the patriarch of the Dutton family, who controls the largest cattle ranch in the U.S. John is constantly battling outside forces to keep his land safe, meaning he’s always at the center of several conflicts with his personal enemies. In real life, Costner is known for his iconic movies like Hidden Figures, Field of Dreams, and The Bodyguard.

Kayce Dutton stars as John's troubled son, who oversees the ranch. It's not an easy road, as he faces troubles with other characters like Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) along the way. You’ll likely recognize actor Grimes from The Magnificent Seven, True Blood, and the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise.

Reilly is known for portraying strong females on series like True Detective, so her role as John’s daughter, Beth, was a perfect fit. Beth is a bold businesswomen on Yellowstone, who will stop at nothing to protect her family. “She’s such a layered, complex character,” Reilly told TVInsider. “She’s one of the most intelligent characters I’ve ever played, and she’s unapologetic.”

Wes takes on the no-nonsense Jamie, who’s the most serious of the Dutton kids. He’s always searching for the approval of his father, but as the lawyer and “black sheep” of the group he rarely gets the attention he craves. This isn’t the first challenging part Wes has had: He’s also played complex characters in American Horror Story and American Beauty.

Monica is married to Kayce, and hails from Broken Rock Reservation, which borders Yellowstone Ranch. Obviously her loyalties are to her own relatives, which puts her marriage in a compromising position. Real-life actress Asbille has been in Teen Wolf, Splitting Up Together, and One Tree Hill before landing her part on Yellowstone.

Rip is a key component to the Dutton’s ranch, and John treats him like his own son. The fiercely loyal hired hand helps out around the property, but also has his eyes on Beth. Cole has appeared in 2 Fast 2 Furious, Good Will Hunting, and Dazed and Confused.

Fan-favorite Lloyd is a hard-working ranch hand on Yellowstone. A real-life cowboy, Smith spent 25 years working as a stuntman in movies like Tombstone and Desperado. Yellowstone is his first acting job as a series regular.

Young Merrill plays Kayce and Monica’s son. This has been the adorable actor’s first breakout role, but he’s handling it like a pro. “I’ve worked with kids in the past that are tough, it’s hard to keep them on track or keep them focused, and he’s actually really good,” Grimes said.

Birmingham is popular from his time on Twilight, Hell or High Water, and even NCIS: LA. But Rainwater, the chief of Broken Rock, tends to be a little more complicated. Rainwater and John are always at odds, as Rainwater is hell bent on fighting for the rights of his residents.

John and Rip take Jimmy under their wings, but Jimmy is far from a perfect cowboy. Rip is particularly hard on him, as he sometimes sees a bit of himself in Jimmy. This is far from White's first time on the small screen, as he’s appeared in House of Cards, Manhattan, and How to Get Away With Murder.

Colby is a cowboy wrangler, but Richards is best known for his time on Good Trouble and Good Luck Charlie.

A new character in season 3, Holloway portrays Roarke Morris, a hedge fund manager and the Duttons' biggest enemy. Hollow has been on TV shows like Colony and Intelligence, but you likely remember him as Sawyer on Lost.

Angela Blue Thunder serves as a political adversary to Thomas Rainwater. She played Pocahontas in the 2005 movie The New World and more recently in Dora and the Lost City of Gold.

Moniz-Grillo joins the season 3 cast as Governor Perry, a potential love interest for John. She's had roles on popular shows like Guiding Light and Nash Bridges.
