From its skinny tires to the recycled plastics in its body, everything about the BMW i3 has been designed for efficiency in electric driving — even if that meant creating one of the odder-looking vehicles to emerge from a major manufacturer. Built from a carbon-fiber frame, the $47,000 i3 can travel on less energy per mile than any other vehicle available, with 81 miles of range from its battery pack, which can be doubled with a small 1.3-liter engine.
