5 child-safe plants to grow in the garden this half-term
Gardening is a healthy, fun activity for children of all ages. As well as getting them outside, it will help kids develop new skills, learn about nature and discover the wonder of sprouting seedlings.
'Gardening and interacting with nature improves kids' creativity since they discover new and exciting ways to grow food,' says Shannen Godwin, a spokesperson for J Parker's. 'Plus, as they learn about nature and the environment, they're able to reason and get new knowledge about the science of plants, animals, and weather, and how they're all connected.'
To celebrate National Children's Gardening Week (Sunday 23rd - Monday 31st May), the team at J Parker's have revealed easy child-friendly gardening inspiration for every family to enjoy. Take a look at the five plants to consider growing this half-term...

1) Sweet peas
Fragrant and colourful, sweet peas are prized for their beautiful blooms. As well as looking lovely winding up an arch, they are easy to grow in pots and containers, too. Why not get the children involved with planting them this half-term...
J Parker's add: 'Scientifically known as the Lathyrus odoratus, the incredibly scented blooms come in a variety of colours including muted shades of blue for the sweet pea moonlit night variety and pearly white for other variants.'

2) Primrose
Keep your little ones busy during the school holidays by getting them to plant beautiful primroses. This stunning spring wildflower, which blooms into a variety of colours, is suitable for garden beds and pots. Make sure to place them in the right spot, as these blooms need moisture-retentive soil and partial shade.

3) Pansies
A cool-weather favourite, pansies are great for kids thanks to their abundance of head-turning colours. Ideal for growing in patio containers, borders and pots, your kids will love slipping on their gardening gloves and getting involved.

4) Strawberries
Plant your strawberries during spring or autumn, preferably in a sunny and sheltered position. Easy to plant and mostly trouble free, these bright red fruits are perfect for children to grow (and eat) during the holidays.
'This is one of the most rewarding child-proof plants you can try this summer half-term,' J Parker's add. 'The strawberry is easy to plant and requires very little maintenance. The Strawberry Florence, for instance, a late strawberry variety, is known to be hardy and resilient to diseases.'
