Zelenskyy said Ukraine would return with more weapons to fight Russia in the city it just lost

Zelenskyy said Ukraine would return with more weapons to fight Russia in the city it just lost
  • Russia on Sunday said it seized the last city under Ukrainian control in Luhansk region in the Donbas.

  • Zelenskyy confirmed Ukraine withdrew from Lysychansk, but vowed to return with more weapons.

  • "Ukraine does not give anything up," he said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his troops would return with more weapons to fight Russia in the eastern city of Lysychansk, which Russia took this weekend.

Zelenskyy said in a Sunday night address that "we will return thanks to our tactics, thanks to the increase in the supply of modern weapons."

"Ukraine does not give anything up."

Russia announced on Sunday that it had taken the city, which means it has now every city in the eastern Donbas region of Luhansk. The Ukrainian armed forces confirmed the withdrawal the same day.

Zelenskyy said Ukrainian troops withdrew from Lysychansk because they were moving away from areas where Russia has the most the greatest weapon supply.

But he said Ukrainian troops would be able to go back and fight there with more weapons.

He did not specify what weapons would be used or where they came from, but Ukraine has received weapons from Western partners like the US and EU, which have arrived periodically.

Ukraine has repeatedly thanked those countries, but at points said that some of their losses could be prevented if those weapons had arrived earlier, or if more were given.

The UK's Ministry of Defence said on Monday that Russia's taking the Luhansk region now means it will likely focus on taking the other eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk.

Those two regions make up the Donbas area, where Russia has positioned itself after failing to take the whole country quickly in its invasion. Fighting between Ukraine and Russia has been taking place there for years as Russia-backed forces occupied it, leading to thousands of deaths.

Zelenskyy and other Ukrainian officials have repeatedly vowed to retake areas that Russia has seized, to rebuild what has been destroyed in the invasion and to not give up any land to Russia.
