While shareholders of Maxar Technologies (NYSE:MAXR) are in the black over 3 years, those who bought a week ago aren't so fortunate

Maxar Technologies Inc. (NYSE:MAXR) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 10% in the last week. But in three years the returns have been great. In fact, the share price is up a full 129% compared to three years ago. It's not uncommon to see a share price retrace a bit, after a big gain. If the business can perform well for years to come, then the recent drop could be an opportunity.

While the stock has fallen 10% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During three years of share price growth, Maxar Technologies moved from a loss to profitability. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.

The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

It is of course excellent to see how Maxar Technologies has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. If you are thinking of buying or selling Maxar Technologies stock, you should check out this FREE detailed report on its balance sheet.

A Different Perspective

Although it hurts that Maxar Technologies returned a loss of 13% in the last twelve months, the broader market was actually worse, returning a loss of 17%. Of far more concern is the 10% p.a. loss served to shareholders over the last five years. While the losses are slowing we doubt many shareholders are happy with the stock. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Maxar Technologies (of which 1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) you should know about.

We will like Maxar Technologies better if we see some big insider buys. While we wait, check out this free list of growing companies with considerable, recent, insider buying.
