Greta Gerwig’s ‘Barbie’ movie, which hits theaters next month, has generated a lot of buzz. This is in part because of its colorful set design. The film, starring Margot Robbie, features the vibrant pink that the iconic doll is known for. The set featured so much pink, in fact, that its use of pink paint apparently caused a global pink paint shortage. In an interview with Architectural Digest, set designer Sarah Greenwood stated that she knew she had to have design company Rosco’s pink paint to capture the whimsy that made Gerwig fall in love with Barbie as a child.

Why was there a pink paint shortage?

Beyond the sheer volume of pink paint that was required to build the set, the shortage of pink paint can also be attributed to supply still being strained from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic when production began in 2022. Worst still, the 2021 Texas Freeze damaged many raw materials needed for the paint. The combination of these factors created the perfect storm for Rosco’s pink paint supply shortage.
