Waterloo Road spoilers follow.

Waterloo Road star Adam Abbou has spoken out about his character Danny Lewis's tragic death in tonight's series finale (June 27).

Danny lost his life in Tuesday's episode, which was the last in this current series, when he became one of a handful of characters trapped in a fire at the school, started by Myles Massey.

While Myles, his mum and Samia all managed to get to safety, Danny wasn't so lucky – and ended up passing away in hospital.

Speaking about the tragic ending, Adam said to Digital Spy and other media: "I always knew that we were going to send Danny off at the end of series two but it wasn't until we were filming episode six that I actually got the script. "

"I was so heartbroken. I played Danny for a year and it took us a year to film those series, and I played him and he becomes a part of you."

"You change the way you look and the the way you dress," he continued. "I was blonde before I played Danny, and then I dyed my hair dark for the role. Everything about you has these little glimpses of the character that you play and for that to just be over for me... I feel every part of that."

Reflecting on whether he would have liked his troubled alter-ego to have a happier ending after everything he's been through, Adam added: "Happy endings are boring, as an actor anyway.

"For me personally, playing this character for so long made me very intrigued about how he was going to go. There were so many storylines that were getting whirled around and I know it took them a while to land on the fire. For Danny though, I mean, it's Waterloo Road – this is what they do, they do big flash endings.

"A part of me would have liked to see him happy and would've liked to see where he would go, because we saw him talk about what he wants to do with his future, how he wants to go off and do criminology and learn about how people commit crimes and why people commit crimes. I was a bit heartbroken that we will never get to see him do that. But that is TV.

"After being there for a year, saying bye to everyone was super emotional, but I knew that I was going onto another project so my mind was at ease a little bit that I wasn't going to be jobless."

Danny and Samia's relationship has been one of the major focuses in this current series, so what does the future hold for her – and their peers – now?

"I feel it will have a lasting effect," Adam said. "But to linger on it too much would not be fair to the other characters. It'll always be there in the forefront that they've lost somebody close to them.

"The term that we would use on set when the storyline was swirling around in the writers' heads, and it was kind of trickling down to the cast, was that it was a modern day Romeo and Juliet for Danny and Samia. It was about how everything was just keeping them apart. Finally they got that moment of euphoria, where they got to come together in episode seven, and then once again, they were just ripped apart.

"I feel like he did die a hero's death, though. Out of the two series, I feel like Danny's been the biggest hero of all. No matter what problem he has happening, there's always somebody else that he feels could use help more."

Waterloo Road's current series is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
