What to Watch on Tuesday: Local marine veteran featured in new PBS documentary

Scott Olson

American Veteran (9 p.m., PBS NC) - Clayton, NC veteran CJ Scarlet is featured in this new four-part series, narrated by Drew Carey (a former Marine), in which American veterans from all branches of the military share their experiences and insights. In the first episode, recruits leave the civilian world as they take the oath to serve in the U.S. military. There is also a nine-part companion podcast.

More about CJ Scarlet: Scarlet comes from a military family — her father and brother were both Marines — so she joined the Corp in 1981. She was part of the first platoon of women to receive combat training and excelled on the rifle range, becoming an expert marksman and completing her training as an honor graduate. Scarlet, with a photojournalist specialty, had planned on a twenty-year career, but sexual harassment undermined her confidence, triggered memories of prior abuse, and ended her career. In her segment, she talks about the therapy she received and her 30 years of victim advocacy work.
