What to Watch Friday: New true crime stories on Dateline and 20/20, ‘Dune’ hits HBO

·2 min read

You, Me & the Christmas Trees (8 p.m., Hallmark) - The Hallmark Christmas Movie season starts tonight, with a new movie in which an arborist helps a farmer whose trees are dying just before Christmas. As she tries to get to the root of the problem before the town tree lighting, they begin to fall in love. Danica McKellar, Benjamin Ayres and Jason Hervey star.

Dateline NBC: The Wrong Door (9 p.m., NBC) - Andrea Canning reports on the murder of 27-year-old Egypt Covington, found murdered in her home in Van Buren, Michigan in 2017. Investigators in Michigan quickly identified a person of interest, but years passed without an arrest. Tonight’s show looks at the search for answers in the aspiring singer’s death and features exclusive interviews with Covington’s friends and family, as well as never-before-heard audio from the family’s private investigator.

20/20 (9 p.m., ABC) - Reporter John Quiñones has the story of Robert Bierenbaum — respected plastic surgeon, skilled skier, gourmet chef, fluent in multiple languages, and an expert pilot. But just like “Jekyll and Hyde,” Bierenbaum had a much darker side lurking underneath. He was also a violent and controlling abuser, and his wife, Gail Katz-Bierenbaum, confided in friends that she was afraid of him. Although authorities suspected him in Katz-Bierenbaum’s 1985 disappearance from their Upper East Side apartment, insufficient physical evidence allowed him to evade charges for fourteen years. He used that time to craft a new life across the country — until prosecutors discovered a doctored flight log from the day Katz-Bierenbaum vanished, and his lies finally caught up with him. Tonight’s report has exclusive interviews with women romantically involved with him after he left New York City and with the nanny for Bierenbaum’s child with his second wife. We’ll also see rare home videos, photos and more.

Dune (HBO Max) - This Warner Bros. film, also releasing in theaters, is available to stream for a limited time for those with the $14.99 ad-free plan. It actually landed a day earlier than originally expected (on Thursday). In the movie, a gifted young man must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over a precious resource, only those who can conquer their fear will survive. It stars Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, David Dastmalchian and Stephen Henderson, with Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa and Javier Bardem.
