Want more money for your Airbnb property? Offer a hairdryer

Looking to get more out of an Airbnb rental? According to the company’s co-founder and chief technology officer, there’s a simple upgrade that will blow you away.

Nathan Blecharczyk said listing a hairdryer among other amenities can bring in roughly an extra $13 (US$10) a night for renters.

“Per night, $10,” Blecharczyk,” said at Quartz’s The Next Billion conference last week.

“Like, that’s how important a hairdryer is.”

While hairdryers are staples at hotels, Blecharczyk told Quartz that some renters overlook their use.

“At least as a male, a lot of males don’t use hair dryers,” he said.

“And so they don’t think about it and they don’t supply, but it’s a real pain in the butt for a traveller who wants one to have to haul it with them, and just better if they know it’s there. So that’s my practical piece of advice.”

And with a half-decent hairdryer carrying a price tag of about $30, buying one is probably a good investment.

While Airbnb has become known for its unique accommodations, it has recently expanded its attempts to court traditional hotel travellers.

Earlier this year, the home-sharing company began testing the ability to tack on specialized services to bookings, such as meals prepared by personal chefs, restaurant reservations, art gallery tours and bicycle rentals.

In July, Airbnb also announced a partnership with three travel management companies that will help bring on board corporate clients. One of the companies, American Express Global Business Travel, which works with IBM, McKinsey and Microsoft, now has Airbnb as a “preferred supplier,” meaning it will be able to offer negotiated rates and business expenditure tracking.

Airbnb’s value was pegged at a staggering $30 billion in the summer, making it the second-most-valuable tech startup in the U.S. after Uber.
