Viridi Energy developing renewable natural gas facility in Maine

(Reuters) - Viridi Energy said on Tuesday it has acquired a biosolids digester plant in Brunswick, Maine, as part of its plans to develop a facility to convert waste into renewable natural gas (RNG) in the state. The company will also be partnering with waste recycling firm Casella Waste Systems to secure a supply of 85,000 tons of biosolids, the organic matter recovered from sewage treatment process, for the facility.

As countries are pushing for a switch to clean energy, RNG derived from biological waste is prized for its potential to replace natural gas and reduce climate-warming emissions.

The privately held company did not disclose any financial details of the deal and the facility is expected to be operational in 2026. Wilmington, Delaware-based Viridi builds and operates assets that turn organic feedstocks – landfill emissions, animal waste, municipal waste and food waste – into RNG.
