It's a good old-fashioned battle of American metal. Dodge's fresh-as-a-daisy Hornet GT squares off against the stalwart Ford Escape in this battle of wits, tech, comfort, performance, and a whole lot more.

In the compact-crossover arena, buyers aren't looking for flash or handling chops. Instead, they want utility and versatility.

The Dodge Hornet GT Plus and the Ford Escape ST-Line Elite both lean into a sportier aesthetic, but there's plenty of creature comforts to be found inside as well.

The Hornet's turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four makes 268 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, more than the Ford musters from the same engine configuration.

Our test car's GT Blacktop and Track Pack bundle ($3990) adds gloss-black exterior elements, 20-inch wheels, and some flashy red brake calipers.

We found the Hornet GT's cabin to be mighty comfortable.

Our test car's sport seats received heaps of praise for being supportive yet not too constraining.

A 10.3-inch touchscreen delivers all the information you need, running the latest iteration of parent company Stellantis's infotainment software.

We did find headroom a bit limited, though.

Don't get us started on the rear wiper controls.
