Verizon to Deploy Ericsson's Dot Cell, Tests VoLTE Roaming - Analyst Blog

Verizon Communications Inc. VZ, will soon become the first carrier to deploy Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson’s ERIC Radio Dot small cell system in the U.S. Notably, the carrier has installed Ericsson's small cell system at its regional headquarters in Detroit, MI.

The Dot is an innovative solution that will significantly boost the carrier’s indoor mobile network coverage and capacity. Moreover, Verizon will use the small cells to support its HD voice service and video calling over LTE as well.

Verizon's Detroit headquarters will provide a foundation for the assessment of Radio Dot system. Notably, the first commercial deployment of Ericsson's Dot had been carried out in Dec 2014, when Vodafone Group plc VOD had rolled it out at Radboud University in Nijmegen.

In addition to the Dot cell rollout, Verizon announced that it has successfully demonstrated the achievability of international Voice over LTE (VoLTE) roaming between different regions of the world with two international telcos – NTT DOCOMO, Inc. DCM and KT Corp. KT.

In the trials, NTT DOCOMO and Verizon completed the world's first transoceanic HD VoLTE roaming call. Also, NTT DOCOMO and KT pulled off the world's first HD voice and video call through VoLTE roaming. Moreover, DOCOMO’s plan to commercialize international VoLTE roaming services by the end of the year should benefit Verizon through its LTE roaming deals with the former.

Thus, Verizon, which has the largest 4G LTE network in the U.S., is making significant technology progress both at home and abroad. With the dot cell’s deployment, the carrier aims to leverage the best technology to strengthen its 4G LTE network and transmit flawless consumer experiences, both indoors and outdoors.

Moreover, Verizon's successful VoLTE trials with DOCOMO and KT are also crucial. They mark a huge stride toward allowing its users to make 4G voice calls to customers on other carriers. Additionally, voice traffic on LTE will help the company in reforming its 3G spectrum to accommodate LTE and increase bandwidth.

Currently, Verizon has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
