Ur-Energy's (TSE:URE) investors will be pleased with their impressive 108% return over the last five years

The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. For example, the Ur-Energy Inc. (TSE:URE) share price has soared 108% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. In more good news, the share price has risen 15% in thirty days.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

Given that Ur-Energy didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last 5 years Ur-Energy saw its revenue shrink by 34% per year. Given that scenario, we wouldn't have expected the share price to rise 16% per year, but that's what it did. It just goes to show tht the market is forward looking, and it's not always easy to predict the future based on past trends. Still, we are a bit cautious in this kind of situation.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Ur-Energy has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 93% in the last twelve months. That's better than the annualised return of 16% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that Ur-Energy is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit unpleasant...
