Two Massachusetts women claim $1M Powerball jackpot prizes from July 19 drawing

Two Massachusetts women claimed their $1 million prize from the Powerball jackpot drawing on July 19, the same drawing where a lucky California resident won a staggering $1.08 billion after purchasing a ticket at the Las Palmitas Mini Market in downtown Los Angeles.

Two days after the drawing, Massachusetts residents Jan Busby and Rae Ann Wentworth-Cadieux claimed their large cash prizes at the state lottery headquarters in Dorchester. They were able to match five out of six numbers.

Busby of Norfolk, who lives 20 miles south of Boston, purchased her ticket at Shaw’s Supermarket in Franklin, Massachusetts.

She only played the July 19 drawing because the reward was so high, pulling her winning numbers from birthdays of her family members, Busby shared with lottery officials.

Wentworth-Cadieux of Hadley, who lives 22 miles south of Springfield, purchased her ticket at Pride Station & Store in her city.

Wentworth-Cadieux chose the numbers 7 and 11, thinking of the famous convenience store chain and used race car numbers for her remaining numbers (10, 13 and 24). She intends to put her winnings toward the purchase of a summer home.

Both retailers who sold these winning tickets will receive a $10,000 bonus.

The Massachusetts State Lottery is currently awaiting the third winner of a $1 million prize from the July 19 drawing. The victorious ticket was procured at Global Montello/Gulf in Waltham.

According to the California lottery, there was one winning ticket sold for Wednesday night's $1.08 billion Powerball jackpot.

In addition, there were 39 other tickets that won big: Match 5 $1 million winners in California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Wisconsin and West Virginia, and Match 5 + Power Play $2 million winners in Florida, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

How do you play Powerball? A beginner's guide to Powerball rules and potential prizes.

How to play Powerball

The Powerball costs $2 per play.

To play, select five numbers from 1 to 69 for the white balls, then select one number from 1 to 26 for the red Powerball.

You can choose your lucky numbers on a play slip or let the lottery terminal randomly pick your numbers.

To win, match one of the nine:

  • 5 white balls + 1 red Powerball = Grand prize.

  • 5 white balls = $1 million.

  • 4 white balls + 1 red Powerball = $50,000.

  • 4 white balls = $100.

  • 3 white balls + 1 red Powerball = $100.

  • 3 white balls = $7.

  • 2 white balls + 1 red Powerball = $7.

  • 1 white ball + 1 red Powerball = $4.

  • 1 red Powerball = $4.
