Do Trisura Group's (TSE:TSU) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?

The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.

If this kind of company isn't your style, you like companies that generate revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Trisura Group (TSE:TSU). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide Trisura Group with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

Trisura Group's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, Trisura Group has grown earnings per share (EPS) at as impressive rate from a relatively low point, resulting in a three year percentage growth rate that isn't particularly indicative of expected future performance. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Trisura Group's EPS has risen over the last 12 months, growing from CA$1.31 to CA$1.48. That's a 13% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. It's noted that Trisura Group's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort our analysis of its margins. EBIT margins for Trisura Group remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 57% to CA$434m. That's a real positive.

Are Trisura Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

It's pleasing to see company leaders with putting their money on the line, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that Trisura Group insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. As a matter of fact, their holding is valued at CA$34m. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. While their ownership only accounts for 2.2%, this is still a considerable amount at stake to encourage the business to maintain a strategy that will deliver value to shareholders.

While it's always good to see some strong conviction in the company from insiders through heavy investment, it's also important for shareholders to ask if management compensation policies are reasonable. Well, based on the CEO pay, you'd argue that they are indeed. Our analysis has discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like Trisura Group with market caps between CA$532m and CA$2.1b is about CA$2.1m.

The Trisura Group CEO received CA$1.2m in compensation for the year ending December 2021. That is actually below the median for CEO's of similarly sized companies. While the level of CEO compensation shouldn't be the biggest factor in how the company is viewed, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Is Trisura Group Worth Keeping An Eye On?

One positive for Trisura Group is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. The growth of EPS may be the eye-catching headline for Trisura Group, but there's more to bring joy for shareholders. With a meaningful level of insider ownership, and reasonable CEO pay, a reasonable mind might conclude that this is one stock worth watching. Don't forget that there may still be risks.
