We tried a new protein beer — here's the verdict

Everything has protein in it these days, doesn't it?

Now beer does, too.

Boston brewer Mighty Squirrel has taken it upon itself to give beer a healthy name.

Cofounders Henry Manice and Naveen Pawar were sports enthusiasts who, according to their website, "loved playing tennis with friends and enjoying celebratory beers afterwards, but ... wanted a brew that would fit in better at the finish line."

They started trying to figure out how to craft a brew with protein. In 2013, they quit their jobs to work on this beer.

The beer officially launched this June, and it's currently only available in Boston. The brewery sponsors 5K runs, too.

The regular beer has 175 calories and 5 grams of protein. Mighty Squirrel light has 109 calories and 4 grams of protein.

But the question remains: Is it any good?

A panel of tasters set out to determine the answer.

Here are the reactions from around the office:

"I don't mind the regular."

"Initially there was like no flavor, and then there was ... a weird aftertaste."

"It's like Guinness without the rewarding parts."

"It's terrible."

"The light one smells funny. It has a really weird smell."

"Light one has such a bad smell."

The regular one "honestly just tastes like normal beer to me."

"It just tastes like regular beer."

"It smells really yeasty."

"It kind of tastes like metal? Like a metallic Bud Light."

"It tastes like an average wheat beer really, nothing special. Not sure what I expected, though. But it's wheaty."

"If you hadn't told me it is protein beer, I would not have guessed from the flavor. Not sure if that's good or bad. I'm drinking the light version and it just tastes like an average, light-flavored beer. Pretty inoffensive."

"It's plain."

So the verdict?

This beer is pretty average — nothing to write home about, but not horrible.

If you're craving protein in your beer, this could be the product for you.
