Tractor-trailer runs off interstate into trees, killing two in crash, SC cops say

Two men were killed when a tractor-trailer ran off a major interstate and crashed into several trees, South Carolina officials said.

Missouri residents Brian D. McGee, 41, and Brandin L. Greear, 41, died at the scene, according to Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables.

McGee was driving a 2016 Volvo tractor-trailer east on Interstate 20 Friday morning, and Greear was a passenger, Ables said.

At about 5:30 a.m. near the 31-mile marker on I-20, just outside Lexington County, the semi ran off the right side of the road and hit several trees, according to Master Trooper David Jones of South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The driver wore a seat belt, Ables said. There was no word if the passenger was restrained.

No other injuries were reported.

Information about what caused the tractor-trailer to veer off the road was not available, but the collision is being investigated by Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office.

Through Friday afternoon, 1,005 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2021, state Department of Public Safety data shows.

At least 35 people have been killed in Aiken County crashes in 2021, DPS reported.
