Apple Inc. shares traded fairly flat on Monday with about 26 million shares traded. The iPhone maker defended itself to U.S lawmakers, addressing a report last week from Bloomberg that said Chinese spies had used a microchip to infiltrate computer networks and that Apple was one of the nearly 30 U.S. companies to be affected. Apple had refuted the report and said that its servers were not compromised and that its global supply chain is secure. Apple wrote a letter to the chairmen and ranking Democrats on the House and Senate Commerce committees, and said, "Individuals, communities, and nations depend on the security and integrity of our shared technological infrastructure. We at Apple hold this responsibility sacrosanct, and we will continue to dedicate intense focus on keeping ahead of the hackers, cybercriminals, and even nation states that hope to steal data and harm user faith in the potential of technology to build a better world.” According to the Bloomberg report, investigators had found that tiny microchips were inserted during manufacturing in China onto equipment by subcontractors of Super Micro. Super Micro also disputed the report, as did Amazon.
