This TikTok doctor is highlighting the unusual breast cancer symptoms we should look out for

Watch: How to check for signs and symptoms of breast cancer

As we near the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October), one doctor has taken to TikTok to highlight the unusual symptoms we should all be looking out for.

With 1 in 7 women in the UK being diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime (via Cancer Research), Dr Karan Raj stresses the importance of being aware of the signs and symptoms of the disease, as spotting cancer early increases the chances of survival.

As well as regularly checking your breasts for lumps, the doctor pointed out four symptoms to be watchful of. Speaking to his 4.4 million followers, Dr Raj said: "Breast cancer isn't always a lump, here are some unusual symptoms to check for."

A rash in the breast or nipple area

"This is more common in inflammatory breast cancer," Dr Raj explained, "a type of cancer that doesn't cause lumps."

Puckering or dimpling of the skin

"This is usually because of a deeper breast lump that pulls the skin inwards," he added.

Skin resembling an orange peel

"If the skin around your breast resembles an orange peel, known as Peau d'Orange, this can be because the cancer cells are blocking the lymph vessels in the skin," Dr Raj revealed.

Sudden changes or nipple discharge

"If you notice any sudden new changes to the nipple, like discharge or inversion, you should get it checked out," Dr Raj explained.

On top of shedding light on the less common signs of breast cancer, the TikTok doctor reminded users that "if in doubt" it's always best to be seen by your GP as soon as possible.

As well as the unusual symptoms highlighted by Dr Raj, there are plenty of other symptoms of the disease to be checking yourself for. According to the NHS, these include a new lump or area of thickened tissue; a change in the size or shape; and a lump or swelling in either of your armpits. The NHS also emphasises the importance of getting to know your breasts, which can make spotting any changes easier.

"Get to know what is normal for you," the NHS website advises, "for instance, your breasts may look or feel different at different times of your life. This will make it easier to notice potential problems."

As October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Victoria’s Secret and Lipsy London are teaming up with the breast cancer charity, Future Dreams to raise awareness and support those with breast cancer. For every pink bra purchased from VS, and every item purchased from Lipsy's Wear It With Love range, £3 goes to Future Dreams.
