Tiffani Thiessen is partnering with Lowe's this spring—here are her top gardening picks just in time for Mother's Day

The loving way Tiffani Thiessen (yes, of Saved by the Bell and Beverly Hills, 90210 fame) talks about her California fruit trees makes me want to go see them. “I should do more gardening tours on Instagram,” she muses from her home in Los Angeles. “That’s a good idea!”

Make smart choices without hours of googling. Subscribe to The Checklist newsletter for expert product advice and recommendations.

For Tiffani, gardening gives her comfort. It is a way to connect with nature, relieve stress and provide a sense of accomplishment when her fruit trees finally thrive instead of falling prey to pests. “One of my avocado trees wasn’t loving life, wasn’t fruiting for seven years,” she tells me. Turns out she needed a new avocado tree with different soils to get it fruiting.

She has Lowe’s to thank for that tip. Now, as a gardening expert herself, it’s the place she goes for all her home and gardening needs. If that’s also you and you’re looking to uplevel your garden, Tiffani knows exactly what to grab on your next visit to Lowe’s. That’s why she’s partnered with them this spring to take her (and your) garden to its highest potential. Keep reading for her top gardening picks from the giant retailer, as well as her favorite Mother’s Day gifts.

Tiffani’s interest in gardening first came through her father, a landscape architect. “He truly is the one who taught me everything about gardening. He gave me my green thumb.” Why Lowe’s? Avocado trees aside, she's been a fan of the retailer for years. “I love that I can not only get the gardening products I need but also have access to expert advice,” she explains, referring to Lowe’s Red Vest Associates.

If you’re a beginner like me, Tiffani agrees that gardening can be a little daunting at first. She suggests starting small: a herb garden, or a tomato tree if you’ve got a patio. “The gardening products you need will vary depending on the climate and where you live,” she notes.

Still, there are universal gardening tips and essentials she can’t do without so she sat down with Reviewed to tell us what they are—all of which you can shop at Lowe’s.

Whether you’re just starting off or a seasoned gardener, add these to your shopping cart on your next online or in-person visit to the retailer. Note that if you visit in person, Lowe’s can guide you on what’s best to plant in your zone and the area you live in, taking into account soils, weather and more.

1. Sta-Green Tree Netting

“California is great in the sense of climate; we’re able to grow a lot of different things,” says Tiffani. “I've been having problems with pests though; birds getting to the fruit before me!” That’s why she suggests protective netting you can put around your fruit. “This will protect the tree (and your harvest!) by ensuring birds will not fly into the trees and eat the fruit.”

2. Miracle-Gro Potting Soil

When it comes to basics, you have to make sure you start off with the right soil. Tiffani's choice is an organic blend made with natural ingredients. "It provides essential nutrients and minerals necessary for strong roots and healthy plant growth. Be sure to use it with annuals, perennials and all types of vegetables to help your plants thrive!"

3. Captain Jack's Organic Lawn Weed Brew

Tiffani knows nut grass can be invasive; she also has pets, including dogs and chickens. “I don’t want to put anything out there that has chemicals,” she reasons. Go for all-natural solutions. Tiffani likes this organic lawn weed brew because it prevents nut grass from taking over your garden, neutralizes weeds and is safe to use around animals.

A high-quality shovel is another basic every gardener needs. "This one sees a lot of action around my garden. The heavy-duty fiberglass handle is easy to grip and tough enough for any job."

5. Exaco Galvanized Steel Kitchen Compost Bin

Tiffani knows a thing or two about reducing food waste (her second cookbook, "Here We Go Again," releases this fall and centers solely around leftovers). Compost bins are another great way to reduce food waste. Tiffani's tip? Tossing fresh fruit and vegetable shavings into your compost helps boosts sustainability as well. This one is her pick, as it’s cute enough to leave out on her kitchen counter.

What fruits and vegetables is Tiffani excited to grow this season?

“We're starting to plant all our summer stuff so we’ve got tomatoes, snap peas, all the lettuces; arugula, kale,” she lists off enthusiastically. “All my fruit trees are starting to bear fruit right now, too. I’ve got my plums, my peaches, my figs. California had a ton of rain this year so my trees are extremely happy right now."

And the biggest one she’s excited for this season? Avocados!

Tiffani's Mother's Day picks

With Mother’s Day coming up soon, we took the chance to talk Mother’s Day gifts with Tiffani. She herself prefers a more subdued, sentimental touch, like homemade things and quality time with her mom friends. "Sometimes that’s all we need, a little bit of time so we can talk and fill each other up and again," she says. "And I always love the homemade stuff. A couple years ago, my daughter, an artist as well, did a beautiful canvas that I have framed in my bedroom. It’s one of the most special things I've ever had.”

If you’re in the market for someone who loves gardening however, here’s what we recommend as the best Mother’s Day gifts from Lowe’s—handpicked by Tiffani herself. Shopping for a non-gardener? Nothing a Lowe’s gift card can’t fix.

In the end, while starting (and maintaining!) a garden can be challenging, it is also rewarding. “Start with what you’re interested in and you can grow from there!” Tiffani says with a laugh. And you know what? She is absolutely right.

Gardens involve a lot of hands-on work and getting dirty but at the end of the day, the goal is for it to look pleasing to the eye. Tiffani especially likes using ceramic planters to elevate your garden décor; coincidentally, they make a perfect gift as well. This ceramic planter from allen + roth has drainage holes and is frost-resistant for colder climates.
