This Solar Power Plant Is Setting Fire To 6,000 Birds Every Year
Solar power has the reputation of being good for our planet - but the bird life of California may wish to respectfully disagree.
The Ivanpah Solar Power Plant in California is accidentally burning up 6,000 birds a year - as they fly into its concentrated light beams and burst into flames.
The problem is due to the plant’s five square miles of mirrors, which focus beams of light onto three 40-storey towers.
So many birds have burned up in the beams that plant workers call them ‘streamers’ - as they leave a trail of wispy smoke as they catch fire.
Biologists say that the bright light of the plant attracts insects - which in turn attract birds.
So far, the plant has tested various measures to reduce the deaths, but nothing has worked.
Plant supervisor David Knox said, ‘We’re doing everything we can to reduce the number of birds killed out here. If there’s a silver bullet out there, maybe we’ll find it.’
