TerraVest Industries (TSE:TVK) Is Due To Pay A Dividend Of CA$0.10

The board of TerraVest Industries Inc. (TSE:TVK) has announced that it will pay a dividend on the 11th of October, with investors receiving CA$0.10 per share. The dividend yield is 1.6% based on this payment, which is a little bit low compared to the other companies in the industry.

TerraVest Industries' Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. Prior to this announcement, TerraVest Industries' earnings easily covered the dividend, but free cash flows were negative. We think that cash flows should take priority over earnings, so this is definitely a worry for the dividend going forward.

Looking forward, earnings per share could rise by 40.2% over the next year if the trend from the last few years continues. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 13% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Dividend Volatility

The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2012, the annual payment back then was CA$0.32, compared to the most recent full-year payment of CA$0.40. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 2.3% per annum over that time. We're glad to see the dividend has risen, but with a limited rate of growth and fluctuations in the payments the total shareholder return may be limited.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. TerraVest Industries has impressed us by growing EPS at 40% per year over the past five years. Earnings have been growing rapidly, and with a low payout ratio we think that the company could turn out to be a great dividend stock.

In Summary

Overall, we don't think this company makes a great dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't cut this year. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We don't think TerraVest Industries is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
