YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Tinseltown legend Norman Lear has put his long-time spread in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles up for sale on the open market with a noteworthy asking price of $55 million. As best as we can tell from a careful parse of property records, Mister Lear and his long-time third wife, Lyn Davis Lear, purchased the bulk of the estate in early 1995 for $6.5 million.

Mister Lear, feisty and politically engaged even as he approaches his mid-90s, is unquestionably one of the most influential makers of television fare who wrote and/or produced a slew of groundbreaking and social contract skewering 1970s comedies that include “Maude,” “Good Times,” “All in the Family” — for which he received a prestigious Peabody Award, “Sanford and Son,” “One Day at a Time,” and “The Jeffersons.” The three-time Emmy winner’s contribution to show business in general and the sitcom genre in particular is, quite frankly, immense to the point of being immeasurable and his long-time residence in the mountains between the rustic-luxe Mandeville and Sullivan Canyons in Brentwood is evidence of his decades of entertainment industry success.

The ridgeline compound, per property records, comprises four parcels that total 10.76 acres and while current listing details don’t express the size of the main residence but the L.A. County Tax Man pegs it at 13,320 square feet, a figure that may or may not be accurate. The main residence, built in the mid-1980s, features an entrance gallery described in listing details as “dramatic,” formal living and dining rooms — the former with a fireplace, a double-height paneled library, a “chefs kitchen,” and — natch — a professional screening room. Other luxuries and creature comforts include an art studio and exercise room. There are 7 bedrooms and 8 full and 4 half bathrooms in the main house, including a master suite with dual bathrooms and a private study. The property also offers a pair of “sensational guesthouses,” extensive staff and security offices, and garage parking for 35 cars along with extensive gardens, rolling lawns, a keyhole-shaped swimming pool and separate spa, and a tennis court with trellis shaded viewing terrace, bathroom, and outdoor kitchen.

Mister Lear and his third wife, Lyn, also own a high-floor condo at the high fallutin’ limestone clad 15 Central Park West in New York City that they acquired in April 2008, per property records, for $10,182,500.
