Do Targa Resources' (NYSE:TRGP) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?

The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Targa Resources (NYSE:TRGP). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide Targa Resources with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

How Fast Is Targa Resources Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In the last three years Targa Resources' earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Targa Resources' EPS shot up from US$3.92 to US$4.95; a result that's bound to keep shareholders happy. That's a fantastic gain of 26%.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. Unfortunately, Targa Resources' revenue dropped 21% last year, but the silver lining is that EBIT margins improved from 11% to 15%. That's not a good look.

Are Targa Resources Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Since Targa Resources has a market capitalisation of US$28b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. We note that their impressive stake in the company is worth US$450m. Investors will appreciate management having this amount of skin in the game as it shows their commitment to the company's future.

Should You Add Targa Resources To Your Watchlist?

You can't deny that Targa Resources has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. This EPS growth rate is something the company should be proud of, and so it's no surprise that insiders are holding on to a considerable chunk of shares. Fast growth and confident insiders should be enough to warrant further research, so it would seem that it's a good stock to follow. Still, you should learn about the 3 warning signs we've spotted with Targa Resources.

There's always the possibility of doing well buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. You can access a tailored list of companies which have demonstrated growth backed by significant insider holdings.
