Subaru Leads Off with Sleek Impreza Concept Car at L.A. Auto Show
Subaru provided a glimpse of the brand’s new modular platform design this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show when it debuted its Impreza Sedan Concept, which will be produced as a 2017 model and reach dealer showrooms late next year. Sportier and less angular than the previous-generation Impreza, officials from the automaker suggest that it foreshadows Subaru’s new “Dynamic x Solid” design philosophy.
The concept car’s styling connects front, sides, and rear seamlessly to create a muscular look, according to Subaru officials. Aerodynamics are key in the new design with an integrated rear spoiler. A Ruby Red Metallic exterior with glossy black accents gives the Impreza Concept an energetic look, and Subaru officials point to the recognizable hexagonal grille, hawk-eye headlights, and wing as character traits for the brand.
Styling features flared fenders with an upswept line along the lower door panels. The car rides on 19-in. wheels that are flush with the wheel arches giving a wider stance. Subaru’s all-wheel-drive (AWD) system and a sleek new trunk lid enhance the sporty handling and image, according to Subaru officials.
The new 5-seat Impreza Sedan Concept is an inch shorter and lower than the current model, and more than an inch wider. The next model will likely be powered by one of the redone Impreza/WRX/STI family of engines including a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine that produces 148 horsepower. Currently, AWD WRX and STI models get turbocharged engines that produce 268 horsepower and 305 horsepower, respectively.
Subaru, which sells six models in the U.S., is an independent brand of Fuji Heavy Industries in Japan. Through October, year-to-date deliveries were up 14.3%, to 480,331 units vs. 418,497 unit sales in the first 10 months of 2014.
