Stocks pare losses after early plunge

Stocks pare losses after an early selloff on global growth concerns and credit issues. Are we out of the woods? Yahoo Finance editor-in-chief Andy Serwer and NYSE floor trader Stephen Guilfoyle of Deep Value Execution Services broke down all of today’s market action.

Winners and losers

Stocks suffering in the broader market selloff include Tesla Motors, Yelp, and Chesapeake Energy - the embattled natural gas producer plunged as much as 50% on reports that it had hired restructuring attorneys. Chesapeake released a statement stating it had no plans to file for bankruptcy.

Stocks that fought through the tough tape include ConocoPhillips, Tyson Foods, and Apollo Education - the for-profit college will be taken private for $9.50 a share—a $1.1 billion deal—and approximately a 30% premium. The buyers are funds associated with Apollo Global Management.

European banks under pressure

European bank stocks slipped deeper into the red today, but could the selloff be a harbinger of broader trouble in the Eurozone economy? Yahoo Finance's Justine Underhill has a closer look at the charts.

Broken Markets with Joe Saluzzi

As the market takes hits from all sides, some wonder if the structure of the market is itself a problem for investors and traders. Joining us on the Final Round was co-author of the book 'Broken Markets' and partner at Themis Trading, Joe Saluzzi.

Looking ahead

  • In the early morning, the IEA releases its oil market report which includes monthly figures on demand, supply, inventories, and prices. Last month we saw a build in global oil supplies and inventories, but a draw in output.

  • Earnings season rolls on with huge reports from Coke, Viacom, and Disney after the bell - we'll have Disney earnings for you LIVE on tomorrow's show;

  • And finally - it's round two in the race for 2016 with the New Hampshire primary. The latest polls still show Donald Trump with a big lead on the Republican side; Bernie Sanders is expected to beat Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton handily tomorrow night.
