Stocks on edge as major averages stay rangebound; dollar falls sharply

It's home on the range for stocks, as the major averages swing from red to green, but end up flat. Can anything take stocks out of their rangebound ways?

Here's what the Yahoo Finance team is watching today:

Winners and losers

Shares that disappointed investors today include Ralph Lauren on disappointing margin projections. MetLife fell on an earnings and a revenue miss. And ConocoPhilips, the oil and gas producer, missed on earnings and announced it will slash its dividend in order to preserve capital.

Stocks that had investors cheering today include Take-Two Interactive on earnings. Viacom on news of Sumner Redstone vacating the chairman's role and Philippe Dauman replacing him. And Glu Mobile, the mobile game maker is on fire after announcing it will partner with Taylor Swift to create a game for her. Recall that Glu Mobile partnered with Kim Kardashian, creating a mobile game that pulled in $127 million in revenue.

Bond bubble to grow?

On Wednesday, the TBAC, or Treasury Borrowing Advisory Committee, announced plans to slow the amount of long-term U.S. debt issued, sending bond prices soaring and rates plummeting. How much lower can rates go? Yahoo Finance's Justine Underhill has a closer look at the charts.

The three horsemen: China, Oil, U.S. dollar

China, oil, and the U.S. dollar. If you look at corporate earnings reports, these are what companies are citing as major headwinds to their performance. Gabriela Santos, global market strategist at J.P. Morgan Asset Management, gave her take on each of these crucial market factors.

Looking ahead

  • Yes, it's the big one - the government non-farm payrolls report is out tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. ET. The consensus is for 188,000 jobs created in January, with the unemployment rate staying at 5.0%. The other big question to answer: Will we see any wage growth?

  • We'll have more corporate earnings with Tyson Foods, Toyota, and Estée Lauder all reporting before the bell on Friday.

  • And finally - the party starts in Rio with the opening of Carnival - the world-famous festival held before Lent. Rio's is considered the world's biggest carnival in the world, with over 2 million revelers partying in the streets.
