Yahoo Finance A Speck of Glitter Caused This Woman to Lose Her Eye
I bet in a million years you'd never would consider glitter a deadly weapon. Well, not the finely milled kind anyway, but glitter that is not meant to be used on your eyes - like craft glitter - can actually be a dangerous substance, especially if the label doesn't say it is "eye safe." One woman's terrifying experience with glitter proves this warning shouldn't be taken lightly.
Erica Diaz was cleaning up after working on a craft project with her daughter when a small speck of glitter got in her eye. That speck cut her cornea and created an infection, which ultimately caused Diaz to go completely blind in that eye.
Since then, Diaz has undergone two cornea transplants that went wrong, injections, drops, and antibiotics. All of those procedures put Diaz at rick of a serious blood poisoning called sepsis, giving doctors no choice but to remove her eye completely. She now has a prosthetic eye in its place. Diaz told her story by documenting the entire process on Imgur. And to think that this is all because of one tiny speck of glitter.
"There was a chance that [a] f*cking piece of glitter in my eye could actually kill me," she wrote on Imgur. "I beg you, PLEASE wear eye protection when dealing with glitter."
To make things worse, the strong chemicals in her treatments had side effects that caused Diaz to lose her hair, eyebrows, and lashes. It's been a year since Diaz lost her eye from glitter and she's still getting used to her prosthesis. She's now battling with her medical insurance company, which won't front the bill for all of her procedures, claiming having her eye removed was a "cosmetic preference" and not a medical necessity.
Luckily, Diaz has loved ones in her life who want to help. A friend created a GoFundMe page for the expensive medical bills, which has raised nearly $5,000. "While all of that is going on, I'm still happy and living life and doing my thing," Diaz wrote on Imgur. After everything she's gone through, Diaz's ability to look on the bright side of things is actually really inspiring. She jokes about her spot-on Fetty Wap impression below:
