SiteOne Landscape Supply's (NYSE:SITE) investors will be pleased with their strong 136% return over the last five years

The worst result, after buying shares in a company (assuming no leverage), would be if you lose all the money you put in. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the SiteOne Landscape Supply, Inc. (NYSE:SITE) share price has soared 136% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. In the last week shares have slid back 2.9%.

So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During five years of share price growth, SiteOne Landscape Supply achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 16% per year. This EPS growth is reasonably close to the 19% average annual increase in the share price. This indicates that investor sentiment towards the company has not changed a great deal. Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth.

A Different Perspective

SiteOne Landscape Supply shareholders are up 3.2% for the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 19% a year, over half a decade) look better. It's quite possible the business continues to execute with prowess, even as the share price gains are slowing.
