Who is Jean-Michel Basquiat?
Jean-Michel Basquiat was an American street artist who became well known in the 1980s as part of the Neo-expressionism movement, a postmodern style recognized for its bold use of color, emotional content and large-scale imagery.
Basquiat started out as a graffiti artist in Manhattan and eventually had his paintings displayed in museums around the world—he was actually the youngest artist to ever take part in the Documenta exhibit in Germany when he was just 21 years old. Basquiat died in 1988, but his work is still extremely well-known internationally.
Basquiat’s artwork often depicted social issues, and it is recognizable by his bold scribbling and frequent use of symbols like skulls, masks and his signature crown.
Many people consider Basquiat to be one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, and in 2017, his piece “Untitled,” a painting depicting a black skull, sold for $110.5 million, becoming the most expensive piece of art ever sold by an American artist. So it’s safe to say he’s a big deal, even today.
